Two start-ups are pioneering terahertz and millimeter-wave radio communication systems as a breakthrough alternative to traditional copper and optical cables for server-to-server links within AI-scale data centers.

Technologies developed by Point2 and AttoTude promise to deliver ultra-high-speed interconnections exceeding 1.6 terabits per second using compact, energy-efficient radio-based solutions that cut power consumption and physical volume compared to optical alternatives. These advances capitalize on millimeter and terahertz wave bands to support low-latency, high-throughput data exchange critical for distributed compute clusters, particularly in AI training and inference operations.

With prototypes already demonstrated using standard semiconductor fabrication processes and partner ecosystems like Foxconn and Molex, such innovations could redefine how data centers are architected—making them more scalable, cost-effective, and adaptable to future AI workloads.
